U.S. Senate:
Senator Bill Nelson
-

Elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2000 and reelected overwhelmingly for his second term for doing
a great job serving Florida and the nation for over three decades, Senator Bill Nelson is a proven leader
and principled family man who believes in doing what's right for the
people.
He currently serves on the Senate
Commerce, Armed Services, Budget, Foreign Relations and Aging
committees and is recognized as the leading congressional expert on
NASA.
Nelson’s public service career began in 1972, with his election to
the Florida Legislature. During his three terms, he helped enact the
nation’s first state law to protect consumers from computer
fraud and advocated for responsible growth management laws. Elected
to the U.S. Congress in 1978, he served six terms representing
Orlando and the Space Coast and became an early advocate for a
balanced federal budget.
In January 1986, Nelson spent six days orbiting Earth as a mission
specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia. That experience gave
him a new perspective on the Earth’s fragile environment and a
greater appreciation of the importance of our nation’s space
exploration program.
SFSEC
has had the honor of
working with Senator Nelson's Capitol Hill's office and his
professional and caring staff for the past two years
on this vital project.
His leadership and support for this most-vital cause of the 21st century
that can help save millions of lives and billions of our hard-earned
money for generations to come is a testament of its importance and his concern for Floridians
and the nation's children.

Melquiades Rafael “Mel” Martinez was sworn in as Florida’s
thirty-third United States Senator on January 4, 2005, and took his
place in the history books as the first Cuban-American to serve in
the U.S. Senate. Mel Martinez has called Florida home since the age
of 15 when he came to Orlando from his native Sagua la Grande, Cuba.
From 2001-2004, Martinez served as the Secretary of Housing and
Urban Development under President George W. Bush. At HUD, Martinez
helped further the goals of an “ownership society” by promoting
home-ownership for America’s low-income workers.
After graduating from Florida State University with his
undergraduate and law degrees, Mel Martinez went back to his adopted
hometown of Orlando where he spent the next twenty-five years
practicing law, becoming a board certified trial attorney and
establishing a successful law practice.
In 1998, Martinez became Chairman (Mayor) of Orange County. While in
that role, he instituted what has become known as the “Martinez
Doctrine,” which ensured that no new development could take place
until local schools were able to absorb the rapid growth being
experienced in Central Florida.
SFSEC is very grateful
and privileged to be given the opportunity to request the Senate
co-sponsorship for FY 2008 Appropriation for the Smoke Free Society
Education Center and this most-important cause of the 21st century.
